Beautiful boab tree front wall feature

The story behind the boab tree…
This design was inspired the client’s interest in the beautiful form of a boab tree.
Wayne was inspired by the flow of nature and he found the design to be a departure from other tree forms he has worked on. They are a majestic form and he was inspired by the beauty and stories he found as he researched them.
The trunk is much chunkier than most trees and the branches are also shorter and wider. From a design side, Wayne said he hasn’t built anything like this before, so it was a really interesting project for him to take on.
The build took approximately three months, but is never a linear process so it is something Wayne had to find inspiration to keep the project moving along. The client was overseas for much of this time, which allowed Wayne the time to complete without rushing it.
The piece was created in Wayne’s trademark style of jigsawing pieces of recycled steel together to create his sculptures. This means that the boab tree could also be created as a full trunk piece as well as the half trunk option that suited this wall installation. This piece dimensions were approximately 2.1m x 2.0m, so it is a substantial piece.
Having the client involved in the installation process was great, as we were able to place it to get a feel for how it would sit. It was then decided to raise it a bit higher as she was inspired to create a different style of garden to really emphasise the artwork.
The natural steel look was also requested, so it was cleaned back to raw metal and treated with a two-pack clear coat which will enable the piece to elegantly age over time. The client was very happy with the result.
The final result drew attention from the neighbours as this feature has created something special in terms of street appeal for the home, instead of a blank wall.
